Trappola and Bulka

Preface

This rulebook describes the card game Trappola according to the Prague rules (Bulka). The rules draw for the most part on the Trappola Piatnik Edition (1988) by Robert S. Kissel and Michael Dummett.

This rulebook is a draft. Individual provisions may still change as it is developed further.

Part I — Fundamentals

Article 1

Equipment

1.1 Cards

The game is played with thirty-six Trappola cards in four suits:

Italian/International German (traditional) German
Spade Spadi Schwerter
Coppe Coppi Kelche
Denari Denari Münzen
Bastoni Bastoni Stäbe

Each suit contains nine cards in ascending order of Stich strength:

Italian/International German (traditional) German
2 Do Zwei
7 Sieben
8 Acht
9 Neun
10 Zehn
Fante Bube
Cavallo Cavall Ritter
Re Re König
Asso As
1.2 Bulka

A bowl into which stakes and Stich bonuses are placed.

1.3 Plate

A small plate on which the eighteen cards left over after the deal are placed. The bottom card of the stack lies face up and tells both players which card is certainly out of play.

1.4 Tokens

Tokens are optional. If none are used, the game is played for money.

Article 2

Aim and nature of the game

Trappola is played for the Bulka — the bowl into which stakes and Stich bonuses are placed and which grows over the course of several Parties. The aim is to win the Bulka.

The Bulka cannot be won by a single Partie. It falls exclusively to the player who wins an announced Pro Partie; the requirements for this — in particular a sufficient winning streak — are set out in Article 5.

Winning the Bulka does not necessarily end the game; unless otherwise agreed, play continues with a new Bulka.

A single Partie is contested between two active players: the dealer, who deals the cards, and the challenger, who opens the first Stich. It comprises nine Stiche; the Partie is won by whoever reaches the higher total from Stiche won, voluntary announcements and Stich bonuses.

Where more than two players take part (the standard form with three or four players), two players at a time contest a Partie while the others sit out and wait their turn (Part II).

Part II — The game

Article 3

Set-up and initial order

Three or four players take part in a game; only two players are active in each Partie. Before each Partie begins, both active players pay the base stake into the Bulka.

To determine the initial order each player draws a card. The player with the lowest card drawn becomes the first dealer, the player with the highest card the first opponent. The remaining players join the queue in descending order of the cards they drew. Where cards are of equal rank, the players concerned draw again.

Article 4

Rotation, leaving, joining and the duty of silence

4.1 Rotation

The winner of each Partie stays at the table and becomes dealer of the next Partie.

The loser joins the back of the queue. The next challenger is whichever player has waited longest.

4.2 Leaving

A player may leave the game at any time, provided they are not currently taking part in a Partie; a Partie that has already begun must be played to the end.

Whoever leaves the game has no claim on the contents of the Bulka; the stake they have already paid remains in it.

4.3 Joining

A further player may join a game in progress only if all players agree and, in addition, the Bulka is empty or so few Parties have been played since it was last emptied that the newcomer — placed at the back of the queue — would not yet have had their turn as challenger.

A player who joins is always placed at the back of the queue.

4.4 Duty of silence

The waiting players must keep silent during a Partie in progress; remarks on the course of play, hints and any other influence on the active players are forbidden.

Advising an active player is permitted only in the Pro Partie; the details are governed by section 5.3.

Article 5

Pro

5.1 Winning streak

After each Partie the winner's winning streak increases by one; the loser's winning streak is reset to zero.

5.2 Requirement and announcement

Pro may be announced by a player whose winning streak comprises at least two consecutive wins. The announcement is made before the next Partie begins. The player may play any number of further Parties before announcing Pro; without an announcement he wins the Partie in question in the ordinary way, but not the Bulka.

5.3 Stake and advice

In addition to the base stake, the Pro player pays a further stake into the Bulka.

During the Pro Partie the non-playing players are permitted, by way of exception to section 4.4, to advise the defender. Misleading remarks are allowed as well; only cheating is forbidden, in particular looking at a player's cards.

The advisers have no authority to direct play: every card and every announcement is decided by the defender alone.

5.4 Outcome

If the Pro player wins the Partie, he receives the entire Bulka; his winning streak is reset to zero.

If the Pro player loses, the opponent begins a new winning streak with one win.

5.5 Pause after Pro

If the Pro player wins the Partie, he then sits out and joins the back of the queue; the seats at the table are filled from the queue.

With four players his defeated opponent sits out as well, joining the queue immediately ahead of the Pro winner. The two longest-waiting players become active, and the one who has waited longest becomes dealer.

With three players only one waiting player is available; the defeated opponent therefore stays at the table, becomes dealer and plays against the player who had been sitting out.

If, on the other hand, the Pro player loses, the ordinary rotation applies: only the Pro player sits out, while the defender plays on as the new winner.

Article 6

End of the game and division of the Bulka

At the agreed finishing time the game is ended and the Bulka is divided equally among all players.

If a valid Pro announcement is still outstanding when the game ends, that Pro Partie is played out first.

Part III — The Partie

Article 7

Dealing and start of play

7.1 Stake

At the start of the Partie both active players pay the base stake of ten tokens into the Bulka.

Before play begins the players may agree on a multiple of this base stake; all payments and Stich bonuses then scale accordingly.

7.2 Shuffling and cutting

Both active players may shuffle the deck; the dealer shuffles last. The opponent then cuts.

7.3 Dealing the cards

Nine cards are dealt to each player in three packets of three cards each. The opponent receives the first packet.

The remaining eighteen cards are placed face down as a stack on the small plate; the bottom card of the stack lies face up.

7.4 Start of play

The challenger opens the first Stich. Nine Stiche are played in total.

Article 8

Course of a Stich

8.1 Leading

The leader plays a card; its suit is the suit led. In the first Stich the leader is the challenger, and in every further Stich the winner of the preceding Stich (section 8.4).

8.2 Obligation to follow suit

If the following player holds a card of the suit led, they must play a card of that suit. Where they hold several cards of the suit led, the choice is theirs.

8.3 No obligation to take a Stich

There is no obligation to play higher or to win the Stich. If a player does not hold the suit led, they may play any card.

8.4 Winning the Stich

The highest card of the suit led wins the Stich; there is no trump. The winner of the Stich opens the next Stich.

8.5 Finality and correction

A card once played is final. A correction is permitted only if the mistake is noticed before the opponent has played their card.

8.6 Rule violations

Breaches of the obligation to follow suit and comparable rule violations are penalised under Article 12.

Article 9

Figura & announcements

Announcements are voluntary. Without an announcement neither points are credited nor payments made.

The opponent's payments set out in this Article do not go into the Bulka but pass at once and directly to the announcer. They remain his even if he ultimately loses the Partie; the Stich bonuses under Article 10, by contrast, are payable to the Bulka.

9.1 Figura

Figura are announcements by which a player reveals information about their hand.

Mehrere Figura dürfen in derselben Partie kombiniert werden, sofern jede für sich die Bedingungen erfüllt — insbesondere können Ass-Ansage, Zwei-Figura und Blans nebeneinander angesagt werden.

9.1.1 Three- and four-card Figura

When playing their first card, a player may announce a Figura of three or four cards of equal rank (Aces excepted — these are governed by section 9.1.3). The announcement takes the form “Könige für 6”, “Cavalle für 6”, “Buben für 6” or “Zweier für 10”, and with four cards of equal rank the form “Könige für 12”, “Cavalle für 12”, “Buben für 12” or “Zweier für 20”. Points and the opponent's payment:

Figura Points Opponent's payment
3× Re, Cavall oder Bube +6 5
3× Two +10 5
4× Re, Cavall oder Bube +12 10
4× Two +20 10
9.1.2 Manko

Manko applies only to three-card Figura. When playing their second card the opponent may call “Manko?”; the announcer must then name the missing suit. For four-card Figura, Manko is excluded.

9.1.3 Ass-Ansage

Announcement Points on success Points on failure Opponent's payment
3 Aces +30 +6 5
4 Aces +40 +12 10
9.1.4 Blans and Bianka

Blans and Bianka are announcements that one's own hand does not contain certain high cards. They are announced by calling “Blans” or “Bianka”:

Announcement Condition Timing Points Opponent's payment
Blans Kein Bube, Cavall, Re With the first card +10 5
Bianka Kein Bube, Cavall, Re, Ass At any time +20 10

Blans is announced, like the other Figura, when the first card is played; a player who plays their first card without announcing can no longer announce Blans in that Partie. Bianka, by contrast, may be announced at any point during the Partie.

9.2 Announcements

Other announcements that reveal no information about one's own hand.

9.2.1 Alifer

Alifer is triggered automatically when the scores are level at the end of the Partie; besides that, the players may declare Alifer at any time by mutual consent.

On Alifer the Partie is replayed with the same dealer. The stake multiplier doubles; all payments from announcements and Stich bonuses scale accordingly. The point values (card, announcement and bonus points) remain unchanged.

9.2.2 Pro

Pro is the announcement of a player whose winning streak comprises at least two consecutive wins. The requirements, procedure and consequences are governed by Article 5.

Article 10

Stich bonuses

The “last Stich” means Stich number nine, the “last two Stiche” means Stiche eight and nine, and the “last three Stiche” means Stiche seven, eight and nine. All payments listed in the table below go into the Bulka.

A “Stich won with a Two” means a Stich that the player won with a Two of their own — not a Stich in which some Two merely happened to be played.

No. Condition Points Payment to the Bulka
1 Marc — winning all nine Stiche +30 10
2 First Stich, won with a Two +52 20
3 Stich 2 to 8, won with a Two — unless the Stich counts towards a bonus 4 +10 5
4a Last Stich, won with a Two +26 10
4b Last two Stiche, both won with a Two +52 20
4c Last three Stiche, all won with a Two +78 30
5 Last Stich, without a Two +6

Of bonuses 4a, 4b and 4c at most one ever applies, depending on how many of the last Stiche the same player wins with a Two.

Marc (bonus 1) applies independently of the other Stich bonuses; it stacks with bonuses 2 to 4 where their conditions are likewise met.

Article 11

Scoring the Partie

After the ninth Stich each player totals the card points from the Stiche they have won. The following card values apply:

Card Points
As 6
Re 5
Cavall 4
Bube 3
Remaining cards (Two, 7, 8, 9, 10) 0

To these are added the points from successfully validated announcements and the applicable Stich bonuses under Article 10.

The higher total wins the Partie. If the scores are level, Alifer is triggered (see section 9.2.1).

Article 12

Rule violations

A player who plays a different suit in breach of the obligation to follow suit, although able to follow, has lost the Partie unconditionally — regardless of the score so far.

The same applies to comparable rule violations, unless they can be settled by an immediate correction under section 8.5.
